Mike Hengst - Trumpet 1994-1998

I was checking out the web site and thought I would pass along my update.  I was a trumpet player in the orchestra from 1994-1998. I got my undergrad from UNC-Greensboro where I was in a student quintet which won the Brass Quintet Competition of the Americas. I then moved to Austin, TX for grad school at the Univ of Texas. I serve as a teaching assistant for the  trumpet and band departments. I teach undergraduate trumpet lessons, assist with the Longhorn Marching Band, and serve as the Assistant Director for the Volleyball and basketball Bands. (You may have seen me at the Rose Bowl last January). Even though this pays the bills and keeps me busy, the trumpet is my main priority. I play in the orchestra, chamber groups, and the UT Wind Ensemble, with whom I played at Carnegie Hall last year. Since I have been to UT, I have been to California on 3 different occasions, as well as Kansas City, Denver, all over Texas, New York,  and New Orleans. I even came in 3rd place at the national Trumpet Competition in 2005 and got married this past summer. I received my Master’s Degree in 2004 and am currently working on my doctorate at UT.

Sitting in the back of that orchestra, being from New Jersey, I never imagined any of this, I guess I never even realized that Texas existed. I am living proof that you never know what will happen and where music will take you. The orchestra helped me become a leader, musically and non-musically. It was a great time with great people that I will never forget. It is with great regret that I will be unable to perform in the March concert due to my class schedule. Please let me know if anything like this shows up in the future!
